Hardware or mounting kits are sets with eight bolts, which are used to attach the trucks to the skateboard deck. Basically, there are no serious differences in quality between the various manufacturers. There are brands like Shake Junt or Diamond, which are dedicated exclusively to the production of hardware like griptapes and bolts and are characterized by a special product variety. Otherwise, bolts differ only in length and type of screw head. There are bolts with Allen or Phillips heads. Recently, mixed forms are also available, such as the Combi Bolts from Independent, which can be tightened and opened with an Allen key as well as with a Phillips screwdriver. Freedom Skateshop offers a wide range of bolts from the most popular brands, in all sizes and color combinations.
The most important factor when buying hardware is definitely the length of the bolts. This is usually stated in inches (1 inch=2.54 cm). If you don't use shock or riser pads, you can use 7/8 to 1 inch bolts. The advantage of using 1 inch bolts is that you won't lose the nuts immediately if the bolts loosen a bit after prolonged use. For setups with large wheels or cruisers, the use of shock or riser pads is recommended. These will raise the height of the trucks and thus reduce the risk of wheelbites. We speak of wheelbites when the wheels - for example when turning in - have contact with the deck. If too much pressure is applied to the spot, this can lead to a sudden and unpredictable stop of the wheel. To install riser or shock pads, you need slightly longer bolts, starting at 1 inch. Of course, the pads come in different sizes that you can adjust to fit your wheel size. In this case, the larger the wheels, the higher the riser pads should be. The smallest size available are 1/16 pads, which can also be mounted easily with 1 inch bolts. Since the area between board and wheel is thereby only minimally increased, it is recommended not to use wheels with over 54 mm diameter with this size. With a riser size of 1/8 you can use wheels up to 56 mm diameter under the board, the appropriate mounting kit would be 1 1/8 inch long. ¼ pads are already suitable for real cruiser boards and allow wheel diameters of 57-60 mm.
